Erin found herself most impressed with the fact that Seth insisted on putting his son to bed on his own. She’d offered to help, but he’d declined and told her to go ahead and relax for the remainder of her first day. At half-past eight, he joined her in the library.

“I thought he was never going to settle down,” Seth said, dropping into the huge leather chair opposite where Erin sat. “He couldn’t stop talking about his desk, and the letters and numbers he’d learned to print.”

“He’s like a sponge,” she told him. “He soaks up everything you tell him and remembers it so well. If you’d like me to take over getting him ready for bed—”

“No, that’s not necessary. It’s the only time we get together during the week. I look forward to it.”

“Verna and Pete left about a half hour ago.” Tentatively, she met his gaze. “I thought they lived in as well.”

“Only if I need them to stay over, like I did the night I went to bail you out of jail.”

“Oh.” A rush of warmth coated her cheeks when she remembered how they’d first met. When she looked up, Seth was staring at her, his gaze filled with a new emotion she’d not seen before. Had she not known better, she might have mistaken it for hunger, or desire. The thought made goose bumps rise on her forearms.

“Does the idea of being here with just Ben and me bother you?”

She shook her head, yet kept her gaze on his. “No, of course not. I mean, I know you’re a gentlemen, just like Abby said, and…”

Seth reached across the space between the two chairs and laid his hand against hers. “Relax, Erin. I am a gentleman or, at least, I like to think I am. You’ve nothing to worry about with me.”

Erin’s heart sank. Apparently, she had misread the look in his eyes. She wasn’t sure why it should bother her to think he didn’t find her attractive, but it did. “That’s good, of course.” She stood then and sidestepped between the chairs. “If you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll head to my room. I’ve still a few boxes to unpack.”

“Would you like some help?” He pushed himself from the chair as if to follow her.

The thought of Seth helping her unpack her unmentionables made her pulse race. Heat rose rapidly in her cheeks, her throat went dry. “No,” she said when she could find her voice. “I can manage on my own.”

“Suit yourself,” he said. “I’ve got some work to do for an upcoming court case. I should probably get to that anyway.”

She was about to step away when he took hold of her wrist, pulling her around to face him and drawing her gaze back to his. “Was there something else?” she asked.

“I just wanted to say thank you for everything today. I was worried Ben wouldn’t accept another female figure in his life so easily. You’ve obviously made quite an impression on him.”

She swallowed, hesitant to ask the one question perched on the tip of her tongue.
